The following is an overview of the options available at the Bunnell H.S. Music Department:
CONCERT BAND (Wind Ensemble = advanced band) - This is a class offered at BHS that is similar to Concert Band class at Flood. Marching Band music, Pep music is rehearsed during September and October, and concert literature is rehearsed and performed throughout the rest of the year. The class meets once each day for a full year for credit. You must request this when making out your schedule. Performances include concerts and graduation and possibly home football games. You may be in concert band without participating in marching band.
MARCHING BAND - This is an extra-curricular group that meets twice a week from September through Thanksgiving. Rehearsals are at night so there are NO conflicts with fall sports. The Marching Band will perform at all Home football games, Marching Band Competitions, which are on Saturday evenings (7-8 contests total), and Parades throughout the year. You must be recommended for this by your Middle School Band Director before June 1'st. Band Camp (one week at BHS during August) and Fund Raising and also required. All students in Marching Band must also take Concert Band. (some exceptions can be made.) The Marching Band is one of the most prestigious groups at Bunnell High School, over the years having won Seven Connecticut State Championships in Division III and ranked 5’th in the National Championships in 2006. The Marching Band has performed in DisneyWorld, DisneyLand, for the New York Mets at Shea Stadium, for President Clinton, the Citrus Bowl in Florida, and most recently on Global Television at the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California, as well as the Hollywood Christmas parade in 2005. In the fall of 2002, the marching Band won the Circuit Championship and won every possible award in our class, and in 2003 performed at Giants Stadium and earned the highest score in school history, a 94.25.
JAZZ BAND - This is an extra-curricular group that meets once a week from September through June at Stratford High School. Rehearsals are at night or after school. This is an audition group made up of the best players. You must be a member of the Music Department and Concert Band to participate.
COLOR GUARD AND WINTER GUARD - This is a group at BHS that is similar to the marching band. The group meets at the same times as the Marching Band. You must request this from Mr. Miller by June 1. Performances are the same as marching band. WINTER GUARD - meets starting in December and competes through until April. Fund Raising is a requirement. Winter registration begins in November each year.
INDOOR DRUMLINE - This is a group at BHS that is similar to the marching band. The group meets at the same times as the Marching Band. Performances are the same as marching band. DRUMLINE - meets starting in January and competes through until April. Fund Raising is a requirement.
Please consider becoming a part of one of the finest performing groups in the state of Connecticut. The time commitment is significantly less than most sports or other school activities.
